An Imposter at Heart

This week we have a little departure from my usual writings. A fun ditty I decided to share.

See I've always loved music. Since I was a little girl, the stories you could tell thru songs spoke to me. I instinctively understood how notes and tones conjure up feelings and emotions in the best possible ways.

Shortly after driving across country this past summer, I saw a song challenge on an Instagram post. A local group (in what would end up being my new home) posted a theme each month online. Musicians were then encouraged to create and perform original works based on the idea.

Although I never turned in my submission, what follows is the "blues" song I wrote as a result of this fun idea.

The title to this blog was the concept...let me know what you think...

An Imposter at Heart

His clothes are the newest
The best that there is
But they’re all bought on credit
None of them are his

His degree is so shiny
Hanging on the wall
But there’s no source behind it
Printed at the mall

He’s got so much flash
They all like his style
Crest whitening strips
For a million watt smile

The girls call him papi
He thinks he’s a stud
But under his boxers
The boy is a dud

Oh he’s an imposter
So don’t lose your heart
He’s turned flash and glitter
Into an art

So if you see him coming
Run down the hall
Cause under the sparkle
There’s nothing at all

Oh she’s really something
Perfection and grace
At least until evening
When she takes off her face

Cause under the lashes
The nails and the hair
You’ll find she’s kinda empty
There just ain’t much there

She’s all sweet and purring
If she gets her way
But have one disagreement
And she’s not gonna stay

She’ll empty your wallet
As she walks out the door
But the flirty text later
Will leave you beggin’ for more

Oh she’s an imposter
So don’t lose your heart
She’s turned flash and glitter
Into an art

So you see her coming
Run down the hall
Cause under the sparkle
There’s nothing at all

Now you know the story
Leave those fakes alone
Swipe left on Tinder
And don’t take them home

I’m trying to warn you
All that glitters not gold
You want a real one
To have and to hold

Oh imposter syndrome
They’ve turned into art
Heed my story
And protect your heart
